The Rum Diary!
Fans of the good doctor unite! Thoughts?
"For most of this century, scientists have worshiped the hardware of the brain and the software of the mind; the messy powers of the heart were left to the poets."
It's been a while since I could be on back on the cult unfortunately
But regardless of it being old news I was just curious if there was any other HST fans on here
Yeah that's what I thought as well...I remember it being more serious and more of Hunter S. Thompson than Gonzo Journalism. It's def. one of my favorites from Hunter, I really like "The Proud Highway" too.

I haven't read Rum Diary, but I was worried that the movie would stink because it didn't have that weirdo style of a director like Fear and Loathing did. But if it's more of a straight-forward novel, then that's a good thing. So it might be good. Depp's a good enough actor to pull off two different sides of Thompson too.
I'm an HST fan in theory. I love & respect his style, insanity & drug use.
However, I had a hard time reading some of his books. The one about being in Hawaii w/ Stedman was good. But, then I tried to read the Hell's Angels one. I dunno something about the style was weird for me.
Oh, but the best thing about HST ever??? My husband got into an "argument" w/ him @ one of his spoken word type thingys in Aspen. Apparently my husband was "Un-American" cos the girl he was w/ didn't have big boobs. But, he took this advice to heart as he meet & married me & I have a huge rack.
Not to start any shit or anything, but whenever I hear or see someone say how HST is their favorite author of all time, all I can see is they're essentially the same type of person that says how they only read Twilight books.
The Rum Diary was a pretty awful book.
QFT.
"My April fools joke: A rabbi and a priest walk into a bar. The rabbi orders a beer. The priest orders a whiskey. They have an engaging conversation about the world economy because they are both educated on such matters. Richard Dawkins walks in with a pack of savage scientists, and yells: "I AM HERE TO HAVE AN ORGY OF SCIENTIFIC REASONING IN THE FACE OF YOUR QUAINT SUPERSTITIONS." The priest and the rabbi finish their drinks and quietly leave the bar as Richard Dawkins begins to masturbate." -Phil Jourdan
I never really met any die hard HST fans now that I think about it. I've only met people who like just a couple of his books and don't bother with his more journalistic/serious reads. Though I would like to hear HST thoughts on the Twilight books and Sarah Palin lol

so did anyone actually see this movie?
I saw it and I thought it was pretty cool. Definitely made me want to read the book.
her very lifestyle is a sin
"Irina Marina is the blackest person I've never met. She also hates books. She buys them with her drug dealer money just to shoot them full of holes with her drug dealer gun." - labelleza
I remember enjoying the book immensely when I read it, probably around 7 or 8 years ago. Been meaning to check out the movie, but after seeing a few ads for it on tv last year it sorta disappeared off my radar. I'll have to track it down.
"Hunter s Thomspon is cool b/c he did alot of DRUGS!!!"
-Every fucking HST fan I've ever met

No, HST was cool because of his balls-out skill with the written word.
He was funny b/c he did a lot of drugs.

It's amazing how much he remembered while on all those drugs. Anyway, i'm more interested in his impact as a writer than his actual writing, which was pretty damn good.
I was always impressed how much work he actually did do while on drugs, and have often wondered if he would have been more productive if not on drugs. But then what would he have written about?

I'm more of a Steadman fan and Thompson was basically the reason why I admire Steadman so much. So I'm a HST fan by default. I really enjoyed reading Joke's Over by Steadman on HST.
I just want someone to accept my craziness...haven't found the right kind of crazy though.
Steadman's art was a lot different before Thompson tricked him into taking LSD for the first time.
i enjoyed this pic. i've gotta see the other JD film.

I saw this a while ago. I think it looks funny, but I don't remember The Rum Diary being a funny book.
