Recommendations Please
Hey everyone,
I am one of those people that goes in and out of reading phases. I'll go on a reading binge of sorts than not pick up a book for a while. Anyways, I'm looking for some recommendations.
I have read all of Chuck's fiction with the exception of Pygmy & Tell All. My favorites out of those were Survivor, Lullaby, Choke, Diary, Fight Club. The only ones I didn't enjoy all that much were Snuff and Haunted. I've also really enjoyed the Vonnegut I've read which are Mother Night, Sirens of Titan, an Slaughterhouse-Five. Brave New World, The Green Mile, and One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest are some of my other favorites.
Hopefully that will give you a general idea of the types of books I enjoy and you can recommend accordingly.
Thanks.

Definitely check out the link that Tuff posted.
You also need some Bret Easton Ellis (though Tuffy will probably disagree).
I just read By The Time We Leave Here, We'll Be Friends by J. David Osborne and loved it.
Also check out We Are Oblivion by Michael Sonbert.
Warmed and Bound is an anthology of short stories done by members of The Velvet (it's a lot of the same people who hang out here). It'll give you a ton of new authors to check out.
Fixed.

haha - I knew it!
Guaranteed you'll find several that sound good to you.
Thanks I'll definitely take a look through those. Any favorites of yours you'd suggest from within that link?

Thanks for the recommendations. Looking forward to going out and grabbing a few of those.

Check out The Dice Man by Luke Rhinehart.

Ha! I have that. Gift from a Cultie I never did get around to reading yet. Is it that good, Gig?
Books off the top of my head that I've read recently that I really really dug include (in no order):
- The Contortionist's Handbook - Craig Clevinger
- Stay God - Nik Korpon
- Transubstantiate - Richard Thomas
- Rico Slade Will Fucking Kill You - Bradley Sands
- The Short Timers - Gustav Hasford
- Dr. Adder - K.W. Jeter
- The Adderall Diaries - Stephen Elliott
- Tobacco-Stained Mountain Goat - Andrez Bergen
I'm probably forgetting a few...

Here's a list of some books that I really loved. I'm a big Palahniuk fan, too.

I'm just now getting into him. I read "American Psycho" back in high school but recently got curious to check him out again. I saw the film for "Less than Zero" and recently purchased it in book form and "Imperial Bed Rooms." What are some other good ones from him?
"For most of this century, scientists have worshiped the hardware of the brain and the software of the mind; the messy powers of the heart were left to the poets."
He doesn't have that many books haha. I'd read them in order though. They all have "cameos" of characters from his other books weaved in.
Glamorama is a wild ride. It was a bit of a tough read for me, but in the end, I really loved it. But American Psycho is my favorite by far.

I think I read Glamorama wrong. I had and still have no fucking clue what it was even about.

Yeah, it's not an easy read. There's the film crew, which we aren't even sure is real. It's a satire, so with that kind of sense of humor, it also makes it very sarcastic at times, again, not sure what's real. All of the name dropping. The terrorism, the models, the meta—tough read. But there were many parts that I found fascinating, very entertaining.

It's not just good, it is also from the 70s.

Sometimes I feel like I'm the only person in the world that really liked that one. Thank you Richard. haha

It's not just good,
Got it.
And yet, this I don't get. Yes, I read the publishing date. Meaning? Does it somehow make it gooder?

Thanks for all of the recommendations.
What did everyone think of Damned? The reviews I read on Amazon and Barnes & Noble seemed to be fairly good. Most people saying it was much better than Snuff & Tell All.
Also, anyone have some suggestions on places to buy books cheap (used is fine)? I've checked out eBay and there are some good prices but I figured I'd see if there are any other good places. When I do a search on Google I end up getting mostly textbook links.

The 70s was a golden age. The 80s would cast a dark ray of synthesized-sounding shit on everything, before we were delivered by the 90s.

I've used half.com in the past. It is now owned by - I forget - either amazon or ebay, both of which are also good for finding cheap used books. Be sure to compare shipping costs as well since many sellers price books supercheap and then tack-on an overly high "handling" fee with the postage in order to skirt the percentage that ebay/amazon/half takes.

Also, I don't recall the 70's as being a golden age for anything, but ok.

Damned was ok. It didn't really end though - so I'm hoping it really is part of a trilogy like people are saying. Otherwise the book was kind of pointless since not much happens besides character development. I really liked Tell-All too though. I like the movies that it's based on, so yeah.
I buy mostly from Amazon. I buy new and used from Amazon. If they don't have it, I use half.com.

Yeah I can't stand the sellers that do that with the shipping charges.

Rant is also part one of a "trilogy". We'll see, right?
"Tuffy, you're a Dalek, but only because you're only being kept alive by metal, science and hatred." - ScubaSteve1729
The "horror trilogy" was Lullaby, Haunted, and Diary?
Then there was supposed to be a scifi trilogy, but only Rant ever got written.
Correct me if I'm wrong, because I'm trying to remember.
But Damned has a "to be continued" at the end. Which I guess could be a plot device - which would suck. Or it really means - to be continued.
Or
Chuck lies.

I also believe that no man is infallible. That's why I said that.
Well I ended up buying a bunch of books off eBay from the recommendations page and past book club thread. I bought:
- Lunar Park by Bret Easton Ellis
- Old School by Tobias Wolff
- Sarah by JT LeRoy
- Blindness by Jose Saramago
- Hey Nostradamus! by Douglas Coupland
- Good Omens by Neil Gaiman & Terry Pratchett
- A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving
- The Serial Killers Club by Jeff Povey
The funny part was a lot of them were first edition, first printings but are heavily worn. I'm finishing up Damned now and after I am done with it I'll start in on some of these.
Thanks again for all the recommendations. I plan on picking up some more here soon.
"Accept the things you cannot change; Change the things you cannot accept."
Those are all pretty good. The only one I haven't read is The Serial Killers Club.
You read the LeRoy thing, Pete?
"Tuffy, you're a Dalek, but only because you're only being kept alive by metal, science and hatred." - ScubaSteve1729
Yeah I read both Sarah and The Heart is Deceitful. I enjoyed them both even though JT isn't a real person. Though I did think Sarah was brilliant when I thought that a kid wrote it. But, after knowing the truth, I still thought it was good.
Hm. Thinkie thoughts.
